Roland on the Ropes (1984) sent Amstrad's unlucky hero scrambling through a pyramid packed with ropes, treasure, ghosts, mummies, spiders, and absolutely no health-and-safety inspector. Curiously, CPC players knew him as Roland, while Spectrum and C64 owners tackled essentially the same adventure as Fred. Armed with a pistol and limited ammunition, you climbed, dodged, jumped, and searched for the map needed to escape six increasingly hostile levels. Colourful, tense, and charmingly odd, it made pyramid exploration feel like a very bad holiday choice.
Colourful visuals, varied enemies, satisfying exploration, limited ammunition strategy, and a wonderfully old-school sense of danger.
Visible sprite flicker, occasionally stiff movement, repetitive hazards, and limited ammunition could make already tricky exploration frustrating.
A charming adventure whose ropes, monsters, and maze-like exploration made simple mechanics surprisingly tense and addictive.
