Summary

Exile (1988) dropped you into a vast alien cave system, handed you a jetpack, and then refused to explain much else. Gravity, inertia, water, explosions, creatures, and loose objects all behaved with remarkable consistency, turning exploration into one huge physics experiment. You could fly, shoot, teleport, improvise, and occasionally discover that your clever plan had launched an essential item into another postcode. Its world felt genuinely alive, with robots, imps, and environmental puzzles reacting around you. Brilliantly ambitious, deeply mysterious, and gloriously unforgiving.

What it does well

Huge interconnected world, impressive physics, clever puzzles, emergent creature behaviour, and extraordinary technical ambition for 8-bit hardware.

Where it falls short

Minimal guidance, punishing experimentation, awkward controls, and progress could become bewilderingly easy to derail.

Verdict

A remarkably ambitious adventure that made exploration, physics, and experimentation feel decades ahead of its home-computer competition.
